Central US targets add backbone hops through Chicago; West Coast targets add a transcontinental crossing that contributes roughly 60ms of round-trip propagation delay by itself. That physics applies to every provider equally -- what differs is how much overhead sits on top of it. Our US ISP plans are built around unlimited data transfer with a throughput target of 100+ Mbps per connection. To make that concrete with plain arithmetic: a connection sustaining 100 Mbps moves roughly 12 megabytes per second, so a typical 200 KB product page needs well under a tenth of a second of transfer time. Scaled across a couple of hundred concurrent connections, transfer capacity stops being the bottleneck long before rate limits do. Because ISP plans are unmetered, testing at full speed costs you nothing but time.
Why Success Rate Beats Raw Speed
A proxy that connects in 20ms but fails 5% of the time is slower in practice than one that connects in 40ms and succeeds 99% of the time. Every failed connection triggers retries, wastes rate limit headroom, and extends job duration. That is why our reliability target -- 99%+ successful connections -- matters more than any single latency figure, and why your own testing should count HTTP errors and timeouts as first-class results rather than discarding them. DNS is the other silent tax: resolve times vary enormously by resolver placement, so measure time_namelookup separately before blaming the proxy.
