Why Geo-Targeting Accuracy Is Critical

Geo-targeting determines whether your proxy requests appear to originate from the correct location. For use cases like localized price monitoring, regional ad verification, and geo-restricted content access, inaccurate geo-targeting produces useless data. If you are monitoring prices in Berlin but your proxy IP resolves to Frankfurt, you are collecting the wrong prices.

How Hex Proxies Achieves High Accuracy

Most proxy providers rely on a single GeoIP database to determine where their IPs are located. The problem is that GeoIP databases disagree with each other, and none of them are 100% accurate. An IP that MaxMind places in Chicago might be located in Dallas according to IP2Location.

Hex Proxies uses a multi-signal verification approach. We cross-reference every IP in our pool against multiple GeoIP databases (MaxMind, IP2Location, DB-IP), check the ASN registration address, verify reverse DNS patterns, and measure network latency from known reference points. An IP only qualifies for city-level targeting if at least three of these signals agree on the metropolitan area.

Accuracy by Level

At the country level, our accuracy exceeds 99 percent. Country-level GeoIP data is highly reliable across all major databases, and our ASN verification adds an additional layer of confidence.

At the state or province level, our accuracy exceeds 97 percent. Most ISP assignments are registered at the state level, and our carrier partnership data provides additional state-level precision.

At the city level, our accuracy exceeds 95 percent in major markets (US, UK, Germany, Canada, Australia, Japan). City-level accuracy is inherently harder because ISPs sometimes register IPs at a regional rather than city level. We mitigate this by using carrier-provided data that specifies which metro area each IP block serves, which is more accurate than any GeoIP database.

The GeoIP Spoofing Problem

Some proxy providers use datacenter IPs and modify GeoIP database entries to make those IPs appear residential or appear to be in specific cities. This works for basic GeoIP checks but fails against sophisticated verification. Datacenter IPs carry datacenter ASNs, have datacenter-style reverse DNS, and respond with datacenter-level latency (sub-5ms from the hosting facility). Any site that checks these signals will detect the spoofing.

Hex Proxies does not spoof GeoIP data. Our IPs are assigned by local carriers, route through local carrier infrastructure, and are physically located in the advertised geographic area. This means they pass every verification method, including latency-based triangulation, ASN reputation checks, and reverse DNS pattern analysis.

Practical Applications

Price monitoring requires accurate geo-targeting to capture localized pricing. E-commerce sites serve different prices based on the user's detected location, and even small geographic errors can produce misleading data. With 95%+ city-level accuracy, Hex Proxies ensures your price data reflects what real local users see.

Ad verification requires knowing exactly where your ad impressions are served. Our geo-targeting lets you verify ad placements in specific metropolitan areas with confidence that the reported location matches the actual exit point.

Localized content testing requires accessing region-specific versions of websites. Our genuine local IPs trigger the correct localization logic on target sites because they pass all geographic verification checks.

How to Use Geo-Targeting

Specify your target location when configuring your proxy session. You can target by country code, state or province, or city name. For city-level targeting, use the metropolitan area name (for example, "New York", "London", "Tokyo"). The system matches your request to the closest available IP in the target location.

If no IPs are available in the exact city you specify, the system falls back to the nearest available location within the same state or region and indicates the actual location in the response headers. This ensures your requests always succeed, even if the exact target city has temporarily limited availability.

Continuous Calibration

We re-verify the geographic accuracy of our IP pool weekly. New IPs are verified upon entry to the pool and re-checked periodically to detect any GeoIP database updates or ISP reassignments that might change the IP's resolved location. IPs whose location changes are automatically re-categorized to maintain targeting accuracy.

Key Features

Genuine Local IPs

Our geo-targeting uses IPs physically located in the target region, not datacenter IPs with spoofed GeoIP entries.

Multi-Signal Verification

We verify IP locations using GeoIP databases, ASN registration data, reverse DNS, and network latency measurements.

Metro Area Targeting

Target major metropolitan areas including their surrounding suburbs for accurate regional content access.

State and Province Targeting

Target at the state or province level in the US, Canada, UK, Germany, Australia, and other supported countries.
