What is a Connection Timeout?

A connection timeout is the maximum duration a client will wait for a proxy connection to be established or a response to be received before abandoning the request. Timeouts are critical parameters that affect the reliability and efficiency of proxy-based operations.

Multi-Layer Timeout Behavior

Connection timeouts operate at multiple levels. The TCP connection timeout governs how long the client waits for the initial connection to the proxy server. The proxy connection timeout controls how long the proxy waits to connect to the target server. The response timeout defines the maximum wait for the target to begin sending data. When any timeout is exceeded, the connection is terminated and an error is returned to the client.

When your client connects to gate.hexproxies.com:8080, the first timeout governs the connection to the gateway itself (typically under 2 seconds). The second timeout governs the gateway's connection to the target. Setting your client timeout to 30 seconds while the gateway uses a 10-second target timeout means the gateway will fail fast and return an error rather than leaving you hanging.

Tuning Timeouts for Maximum Throughput

Poorly configured timeouts waste resources on dead connections or prematurely terminate valid slow responses. For large-scale scraping, timeout optimization can dramatically improve throughput and reduce wasted bandwidth.
