Mobile Proxy Performance

Performance benchmarks for mobile carrier proxies including 4G/5G network characteristics.

Scorecard

Mobile Score
50.6
Composite mobile proxy performance score balancing speed, stealth, and coverage.

Methodology

  • • Tested across 15 mobile carriers in 8 countries
  • • 4G and 5G endpoints measured separately
  • • 5,000 requests per carrier for statistical significance
  • • Detection tested against mobile-specific anti-bot rules
  • • Throughput measured with 1MB payloads

Metrics

Mobile latency: Median request latency through mobile carrier proxy connections.
Carrier diversity: Number of unique carriers and geographic distribution in the pool.
Mobile detection rate: Percentage of requests flagged as proxy traffic on mobile-aware platforms.
5G throughput: Sustained bandwidth through 5G mobile proxy connections.

Mobile Proxy Performance Benchmark

Mobile proxies route traffic through real 4G and 5G carrier networks, offering the highest trust scores of any proxy type. Because mobile IPs are shared among thousands of legitimate users via CGNAT (Carrier-Grade NAT), they are rarely blacklisted. This benchmark evaluates mobile proxy performance across key dimensions.

Why Mobile Proxies Are Different

Unlike residential or ISP proxies, mobile proxies inherit the characteristics of cellular networks: variable latency, asymmetric bandwidth, and carrier-level NAT. These properties create both advantages (extremely high trust scores) and trade-offs (higher base latency) that this benchmark quantifies.

Latency Profile

Mobile proxies on Hex Proxies showed a median latency of 185ms, approximately 40ms higher than residential proxies. However, the p95 latency was more predictable at 380ms, compared to residential p95 of 420ms. The higher baseline but tighter distribution reflects the consistent nature of carrier network routing.

| Metric | Hex Mobile (4G) | Hex Mobile (5G) | Hex Residential | Industry Mobile | |--------|----------------|----------------|-----------------|-----------------| | Median latency | 185ms | 145ms | 145ms | 280ms | | P95 latency | 380ms | 290ms | 420ms | 520ms | | Throughput | 12.5 Mbps | 22.0 Mbps | 18.5 Mbps | 8.0 Mbps | | Success rate | 98.5% | 98.8% | 96.4% | 93.2% | | Detection rate | 0.8% | 0.9% | 2.8% | 2.5% |

5G vs 4G Performance

Hex Proxies 5G mobile endpoints outperformed 4G across all metrics: 22% lower latency (145ms vs 185ms), 76% higher throughput (22 Mbps vs 12.5 Mbps), and marginally better success rates. As 5G coverage expands, mobile proxies are closing the latency gap with wired proxies while maintaining their trust score advantage.

Trust Score Advantage

Mobile IPs achieved a 0.8% detection rate on Hex Proxies, compared to 2.8% for residential. This 3.5x advantage exists because anti-bot systems must be cautious about blocking mobile IPs that are shared by thousands of legitimate users. Blocking a mobile IP risks blocking a significant portion of a carrier's user base.

Carrier Diversity

Hex Proxies mobile pool spans 15 major carriers across 8 countries. Carrier diversity prevents over-reliance on a single network, which could trigger carrier-level rate limiting. In our tests, no single carrier accounted for more than 20% of assigned IPs, indicating healthy pool diversification.

Use Case Performance

We tested mobile proxies against three use cases: social media access, app store scraping, and mobile ad verification. Success rates exceeded 98% for all three, with social media showing the highest at 99.1%. These platforms are designed for mobile users, so mobile proxy traffic blends seamlessly.

Cost Efficiency Analysis

Mobile proxies cost approximately 2-3x more per GB than residential proxies. However, the higher success rate (98.5% vs 96.4%) means fewer retries, and the lower detection rate (0.8% vs 2.8%) means fewer wasted requests. For detection-sensitive use cases, mobile proxies often deliver a lower effective cost per successful request despite the higher unit price.

Recommendations

Use mobile proxies for use cases where detection avoidance is the top priority: social media, app ecosystems, and high-value targets with aggressive anti-bot protection. For general web scraping where cost is more important than stealth, residential proxies remain the better value. Hex Proxies 5G endpoints offer the best of both worlds for latency-sensitive mobile workflows.

Steps

1
Identify target carriers
Determine which mobile carriers serve your target regions.
2
Test 4G vs 5G
Measure performance differences between network generations.
3
Benchmark detection
Test mobile proxies against mobile-specific anti-bot rules.
4
Calculate effective cost
Factor in success rates and retries for true cost-per-result.

Tips

  • • Mobile proxies excel for social media and app store access where mobile traffic is expected.
  • • 5G endpoints offer significantly better latency and throughput than 4G.
  • • Calculate cost per successful request, not just cost per GB, for accurate ROI analysis.
